Getting Started

Student Organizations

Student Organizations are a great way to connect with students who share similar interests and goals, while expanding your knowledge and becoming better prepared for your future. They provide students with the opportunity to enhance the communication, leadership, and teamwork skills – all qualities that are important in the legal and health professions.

All university-recognized student organizations are registered with The Pirate Experience, which you can find in Pirateport.  You can visit the site to explore your options. Student organization fairs are held at the beginning of each semester (“Get a Clue” fair in the fall, and at the “Polar Bear Plunge” in the spring).

There is at least one student organization for every pre-professional area our office supports. Each of the pre-professional advisors serve as an advisor for at least one student organization. However, our office works closely with all student organizations related to the health sciences and law. We post meeting days/locations on our website and market them to students registered with us.

Volunteering

Healthcare and law are both services profession that require the ability to communicate and work well with others. In preparation for professional programs, it is important that you volunteer within the community to demonstrate your passion for helping others. Service will also allow you to strengthen your interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone. You will learn more about others, yourself, and hopefully find connections between these activities and your intended future profession.

The Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement at ECU works with a variety of community agencies to provide opportunities for service to our students.

ECU Health Medical Center, our local hospital, accepts student volunteers at the beginning of each semester.
